Question: On back days do you perform deadlifts at the beginning or end of the workout? Should I wipe myself out with deads at the beginning or try to fight thru them at the end.
Thanks! / Ted
Answer: You can benefit by doing them 1st, last, or anywhere in between. By doing them first you’ll be able to use more weight. So if improving your deadlift numbers is a goal, do them first.
Doing them last will enable you to train hard and still stimulate your back, but without having to use as much weight. Although you may grow as well doing it this way (and it’s arguably safer), it’s not optimal if maximum strength in the deadlift is your goal.
I, more times than not, do them first. However, it’s not uncommon for me to do them 2nd or 3rd in my back workout. Rarely do I do them last, however. I feel that I’m simply too fatigued at that point to put it maximum effort with perfect form.
