So Far So Good: Steve’s Ironman Triathlon Update

One of my star pupils is competing today (right now in fact) in his first triathlon ever. He decided to “go BIG” and skip any and all lesser events and make his first triathlon the Ironman. He hasn’t even done a half triathlon like most mortals would!
His diet and training went perfectly…up until a couple weeks ago when he broke his foot while training. So to say the odds are stacked against him to finish is an understatement. However, if anyone can do it, Steve can. That dude is determined!
Breaking News: I just got a text from Steve saying “at 56 miles (into the ride), and firing on all 8 cylinders!”
So, he has finished the 2.4 mile swim, and is half-way through the 112-mile bike ride. Once he finishes the ride, “all” he has to do is complete an entire marathon – 26.2 miles road-pounding running. But with a stress fracture in his foot, the run will be the toughest (certainly the most painful) part.
Go, Steve, GO!
Latest News! – Steve finished with flying colors! Said everything went awesome! Of course he had foot pain (that tends to happen when they’re broken) and also had some knee pain. But he never “bonked” at all.
Though my part was easy, we sure made a great team…and that’s cool cause coaching a triathlete (nutritionally) is the closest my big butt will ever come to doing a triathlon!
I’m going to interview Steve next week to get his take on what it’s like to do an Ironman Triathlon… especially considering he’d never done one, or even a “half tri!” Should be interesting.
So stay tuned… you and I will live vicariously through Steve!

Dr Clay, are you going to show us the nutrition and strength program you put together for Steve? I’m sure there are lots of budding endurance athletes who read you and would be interested. I know I am.
Sincerely
Jim Mallon
Jim, that’s a good idea.
I will certainly go over the high points of his program, though I won’t just cut and paste his entire program since, after all, he paid me for it! Out of respect for clients I don’t reveal their exact programs. But that really wouldn’t do any good cause anyone else’s would need to be slightly different anyway.
So I’ll go over how to “build your own” endurance program like I did for Steve. I think that’s fair and is of more benefit that his own program.
Best,
Dr Claly
Roger that DC and thank you. I wouldn’t ask about the specific program just a loose outline. I understand client/trainer privilege. However it is pretty impressive on your part. Known mostly as a bodybuilding/fitness trainer to put together a program that worked well on the other end of the spectrum. I find that pretty amazing and speaks well to your overall understanding of nutrition and how to apply it in vastly different applications. As for Steve, an Ironman right out of the box! He must be a special “animal” indeed. Congrats Steve, very impressive effort!
